I was just looking through my art and feeling really nostalgic for the characters in my comics. I haven’t worked on my comics in ages. That makes me pretty sad… These illustrations are between one and two years old.

Hello.
Yes. I’m back from Europe…. As of a month and a half ago. I’ve been slow to start making art again….
BUT! I made this cool illustration today because someone requested it on Deviant Art. It’s a pretty cool one! The pose is either really neat or really weird. I haven’t decided yet, haha…. BUT IT’S NEW ART SO IT’S AWESOME, OK?
Also, I’ve never done an action blur like this before. How’s the effect? I love trying new things! It makes me feel like an artist again!
I’ve taken up the challenge I issued for myself back in January about pushing character design. This is still very much in progress, but I feel great about a lot of the changes I’ve made. I’ll start with the awesomest of them all.
Mango is looking pretty fantastic, if I do say so myself.
Next up is Araya! I think I finally found an outfit that just seems spot on for her. I’m so pleased.
I also doodled Lauren in her new outfit, and messed with her face style and body type. I’m still not totally satisfied, buuuut… *big shrug*
And lastly… the guy i wanted to make the most progress with… I haven’t quite figured out. Truth be told, the more I broaden Kay’s shoulders and manly-fy him, the less I like him. I might have to make him more unique in a different direction, haha… But just so you know that I’ve been trying, here’s the latest image (with a bald Araya, Kay and Mango in the back ground to compare heights).
I just realized that it’s been a long time since I’ve drawn Kaipo. I hope he’s not off in a corner somewhere crying. Don’t worry Kaipo, love, you are not forgotten!
Here they are, lined up again, in all their beauty: Mango, Araya, Kay, and Kaipo. They’re my darlings. Most of the design changes are in their clothing. I made Kay’s skin a little darker too. DIVERSITY!
It’s fun to watch your characters change. They’re growing up!
I made some more final design changes regarding Araya’s body shape. Look at them legs! I don’t know why, but I love drawing shapely (is that even the right word? Haha…) legs.
Here are some action poses I tried with Araya. It just occured to me that she’s not happy in a single one of these poses. Yep. That just about sums Araya up.
Figuring out expressions for your character is when they really start to come a live.I’ve a got a long way to go, but this is what I’ve got for Araya for now.
I guess she’s kind of naked. I think it weirded out my teacher. But, what can I say? I dunno why, but I love drawing shoulders. Shoulders are beautiful.
Here’s a five-point-turnaround I made to see if I could draw Araya from all angles.
Even though her hips got a bit wonky, I think this one turned out pretty good. It will be really valuable
I made this one when I was working on draft 2 of Spirit Bond. I made it to be a desktop background with a calendar on it. This is the picture sans calender.
When I looked at this for the first time in months, I was like, “Awww, what cute friends.” Then it suddenly struck me that Desta, the girl on the right, is no longer a character in my latest draft. Lauren, the blond girl, has become even more important in her stead. Though this is a cute picture it’s a bit like looking at a photo where one of the people in it is dead (Haha, I didn’t mean to be so morbid all of a sudden).
Oh well. All writers would agree, I’m sure, that sometimes you’ve just got to chop people out of your story.
